in White Plains.
White Plains, the seat of Westchester County, has 27,561 homes in the Census Bureau's count. More than half sit in large buildings of ten or more, 55 percent, from the downtown towers by the train station to older apartment blocks near the center. Single family houses account for 31 percent, spread across neighborhoods such as Battle Hill, Fisher Hill and Gedney Farms, and small buildings of two to nine homes for 14 percent. Owners hold 51 percent of homes. The housing is mostly postwar: 30 percent of it predates 1940, 17 percent dates from 2000 or later, and 1961 is the median year built.
Many White Plains pickups begin at a concierge desk, a loading dock or a service elevator booked for a set window, since 55 percent of homes are in large buildings. Ask the building how vendors are scheduled and note it under Building access. For a house in Gedney Farms, Fisher Hill or another residential neighborhood, give the floor, the door you would like used and a word about the driveway.
