PHOTOGRAPHED BY OUR TEAMCare begins with
understanding.
Antique rugs require an extraordinarily careful approach. Age, natural dyes, and delicate fibers demand cleaning techniques that prioritize preservation above all else. Our specialists evaluate each antique piece for colorfastness, structural integrity, and fiber fragility before selecting a cleaning protocol. We use gentle, low-agitation methods that remove decades of accumulated soil while honoring the character and patina that make your rug a treasure.
We discuss the condition, recommended treatment and expected outcome with you. The appropriate method is selected after inspection; not every treatment is suitable for every rug.
Antique Rug Cleaning in the East Village and Lower East Side
Earlier repairs tell us a lot about an antique rug. A patch woven in with newer wool can bleed or shrink differently from the rug around it, and a repair glued or sewn on from the back can let go in the water, so we look for every one before cleaning and tell you what we found. If you know of repairs, write them on the pickup tag. The median home here is in a building from 1930, and in a tenement walk-up an old rug comes down a narrow stair carried flat along its full length, so no weak area takes the strain. Some old rugs are better washed gently and left soft, and we say so first.
