The East Village and Lower East Side hold 65,878 homes in 2,598 residential buildings, and the typical home is in a building of six floors. Walk-ups account for 39 percent of homes, many of them tenement buildings on blocks from Tompkins Square to Delancey Street, while elevator buildings hold 47 percent, from large apartment complexes to newer glass towers.
