PHOTOGRAPHED BY OUR TEAMCare begins with
understanding.
Handmade rugs, whether hand-knotted, hand-tufted, or flatwoven, represent a personal investment in craftsmanship. Each piece has unique characteristics that demand individualized attention. Our specialists examine the weave structure, fiber blend, and dye method of every handmade rug before designing a custom cleaning plan. This ensures the artisan's work is preserved while delivering a deep, revitalizing clean.
We discuss the condition, recommended treatment and expected outcome with you. The appropriate method is selected after inspection; not every treatment is suitable for every rug.
Handmade Rug Cleaning on the Upper East Side
Handmade rugs include flatweaves such as kilims and dhurries as well as knotted pile rugs, and they react to water differently from machine made rugs. We check how the rug was made, whether the colors are stable and what the back looks like before choosing the wash. Flatweaves can shrink or ripple when they are soaked and dried carelessly, so they are dried flat and under control. Only 6 percent of Upper East Side homes date from 2000 or later, and older apartments often have radiators under the windows; keep a flatweave a hand's width away from them so its cotton foundation does not dry out and stiffen.
