Most homes on the Upper East Side are apartments in elevator buildings. Of the 151,356 homes in the city's land use records for the Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island, counted together here, 60 percent are in elevator buildings and 17 percent in condominiums, and about a third are co-op apartments. Two in five are in buildings finished before 1940, which takes in the prewar co-ops along Fifth and Park Avenues and the townhouse blocks of Carnegie Hill. A fifth of all homes are walk-ups.

Older rugs, pieces handed down in a family and silk rugs all need a careful look before they are washed. We check the dyes, the foundation and any earlier repairs first, and tell you what to expect before the work begins.

The typical home here is in a building of 16 floors, and a third of all homes are in buildings of twenty floors or more, so most pickups start with the building rather than the rug. Many co-ops and condominiums ask vendors to use a service entrance and to book the service elevator for set hours.
