Homes
in Harlem.

Harlem's 83,600 homes are in 5,103 buildings across Central Harlem, Hamilton Heights and Sugar Hill. Elevator buildings hold 46 percent of them and walk-ups 39 percent, with condominiums at 11 percent and houses for one or two families at 2 percent. Prewar buildings, those finished before 1940, hold two thirds of the homes, and 1920 is the median year built. That age is plain in the brownstone and row house blocks, from Strivers' Row to the streets around Mount Morris Park, and in the large prewar apartment houses of Sugar Hill. Newer buildings hold the 14 percent of homes put up in 2000 or later.

Many Harlem pickups go by the stairs. Two in five homes here are walk-ups, and the typical Harlem home sits in a 6 floor building, so let us know which floor the rug is on and whether the way out includes a stoop or a tight turn on a landing, where a long rug needs room to swing. In an elevator building, the superintendent or doorman may want notice; type a name and the hours that suit the building under Building access on the pickup tag. We plan the carry before we arrive.
