The Financial District is a neighborhood of high-rise apartments. City Planning's tax lot data counts 36,436 homes here, Battery Park City included, in only 261 residential buildings, and buildings of at least 20 floors hold three in four of them; the typical home is in a building of 29 floors. Condominiums account for 46 percent of homes and elevator rental and co-op buildings another 52 percent, so walk-ups are rare. Prewar buildings, finished before 1940, hold three in ten homes, among them former office towers near Wall Street that now hold apartments, while 23 percent are in buildings that opened in 2000 or later.

With 36,436 homes in 261 residential buildings, a visit usually starts at a loading dock or a service entrance and continues in a freight elevator scheduled by the management office, and some offices ask for a vendor's details in advance.
