Homes
in SoHo.

Four in five homes in SoHo, Little Italy and Hudson Square predate 1940, and their median home stands in a building from 1904. City Planning's tax lot data counts 15,323 homes in 1,133 residential buildings across the three; walk-ups hold 48 percent of them, and elevator buildings and condominiums 22 percent each. Six floors is the height of the building that holds the typical home here, and buildings that reach 20 floors hold only 5 percent of homes. The older stock takes in the cast iron loft buildings of the SoHo Cast Iron Historic District and the tenement blocks of Little Italy, while buildings put up in 2000 or later hold 14 percent.

Stairs decide most pickups in SoHo. Nearly half the homes are in walk-ups and the typical home sits in a 6 floor building, so a rug often comes down by hand, rolled and wrapped, one landing at a time. Tenement stairs in Little Italy are narrow and turn tightly; note the floor, and whether the stair winds or runs straight, in the Building access box. Some loft buildings have a freight elevator, and if yours does, add who runs it and when. Parking is tight on these streets, so a note about the entrance we should use saves time.
