Chelsea has as many homes in prewar buildings as in buildings from 2000 or later. Of the 46,130 homes that City Planning's tax lot data counts in Chelsea and Hudson Yards, 39 percent sit in buildings finished before 1940 and the same share in buildings dating from 2000 or later, with 1963 as the median year built. Elevator buildings hold 54 percent of homes, condominiums a quarter and walk-ups 18 percent, and 16 percent are co-op apartments. The typical home is in a building of 14 floors, while buildings of 20 floors or more, the new towers of Hudson Yards among them, hold 37 percent of homes. The older side takes in the rowhouse blocks of the Chelsea Historic District.

Chelsea pickups follow the building. In elevator buildings and condominiums, which hold four in five homes here, the visit goes through a service entrance and an elevator booked with the desk or the super; in a walk-up, 18 percent of homes, the rug comes down the stairs by hand.
