Prewar buildings, finished before 1940, hold three in four West Village homes, and half of all homes here are in buildings from 1910 or earlier. The 24,535 homes counted here sit in 1,769 residential buildings; the typical home is in a building six floors high, and only 4 percent are in towers reaching twenty floors. Walk-ups hold 39 percent of homes and elevator apartment buildings 36 percent; condominiums account for 18 percent, co-ops for 23 percent and one and two family houses for 3 percent. The stock includes Federal and Greek Revival row houses and older walk-up apartment buildings on streets laid out before the grid, where West Fourth Street crosses West Tenth, while some former industrial buildings near the Hudson now hold apartments.

At least two in five West Village homes are reached by stairs alone, so a pickup here is mostly about stairs. A row house usually has a stoop up to the parlor floor and a narrow stair above it, and an older walk-up has tight landings where a long roll must turn.
